Bulb Types

Many of our lights include bulbs and you may be concerned about replacing them easily in the future. Rest assured all our light fittings we sell use bulbs that can easily be found on the high street. They are also future proof, able to take new modern low energy bulbs.

There are four types of bulbs that cover 99% of the light fittings we offer. These are

Incandescent: These are the traditional type light bulbs that we have all used for many years.

Compact Fluorescent Lamps (CFL): Low energy bulbs used to replace the old traditional bulbs. Up to 80% cheaper to run.

LED Lighting: The newest type, even more efficient than the CFL’s. Up to 90% cheaper to run with instant light just like traditional bulbs.

Halogen: Most commonly seen in spotlights or downlights. There are now Low energy and LED versions for most halogen bulb fittings.

Bulb Fitting Type

This is how the bulb fits into the light fitting, most common are screw fit and bayonet as well as GU10 for spot lights. Although it may seem like there are far more types as different suppliers have different names for the same fitting. The one thing to remember is that all the light fittings we sell use bulbs that are easy to get on the high street as well as online.

Energy Vs Brightness

How much electricity a bulb uses is shown in wattage, 60w, 100w and so on. The more watts it uses the more it costs to run. Watts is not a true description of how bright a bulb is and this is where much confusion arises.

Brightness is actually measured in Lumens and packaging has been changing to show this, but for those of us used to watts that’s not very helpful.

Here is a quick comparison chart

So if you have a light fitting with 3 × 60w bulbs you are burning 180watts. If you were to replace them with LED versions you would get the same brightness but burn just 18w to 24w.

Yes that’s right it would save you up to 90% on your bills, if you use a CFL Low Energy it’s a little less, around 80% cheaper than the old fashioned bulbs.

All our lights will take at least one of the low energy versions “CFL” or “LED” if not both versions.

Maximum Wattage

The wattage shown for any of our light fittings is always the maximum bulb wattage allowed, you can use any wattage below this.

Did you know

Traditional bulbs can be dimmed using a dimmer switch. Great for setting the atmosphere, but did you know they use the same amount of energy even when dimmed so not an energy saving option.

You can now also get dimmer versions of Low Energy and LED’s.
